What is Viagra?

Viagra is a drug used to treat erectile dysfunction (impotence) in men. It helps most men with erectile dysfunction achieve an erection and keep it. It is used for various sexual disorders in men. The active ingredient sildenafil contributes to achieving an erection but at the same time, it has no therapeutic effect on dysfunction since it acts symptomatically. The action of the drug is determined by the ability of the active ingredient to inhibit phosphodiesterase 5, which is involved in the breakdown of cyclic guanosine monophosphate, necessary for relaxing the muscles of the cavernous body. When the muscles of the corpora cavernosa relax, blood flow in the male genital organ improves, its size increases, and erectile function is normalized, provided that a man is sexually aroused.

The drug is produced in tablets for oral administration.

Dosage and mode of application

A tablet is taken 1 hour before sexual intercourse. The optimal dosage is 50 mg once daily. Depending on the individual factors, the dosage of the drug can be increased to 100 mg per day or reduced to 25 mg per day. It should be noted that 100 mg is the maximum daily dosage.

The doctor may prescribe a lower dose:

• if you are over 65 years of age or you have severe kidney or liver disease, the doctor will recommend starting with the lowest dose (25 mg) of sildenafil;
• if you are taking protease inhibitors used to treat HIV infection, your doctor may recommend a dose of 25 mg;
• if you have prostate problems or high blood pressure and you are taking alpha blockers, your doctor may recommend starting with a lower dose of the medication.

Contraindications

The use of Viagra is contraindicated in the presence of increased sensitivity and intolerance to the components of the drug, as well as in the presence of such factors as:

• predisposition to bleeding;
• injury, deformation of the penis;
• ulcers on the gastrointestinal tract;
• disruption of the liver;
• severe liver failure;
• cirrhosis of the liver;
• prolonged painful erection;
• persistent high blood pressure;
• persistent low blood pressure;
• arrhythmia;
• angina pectoris;
• heart failure;
• age under 18 years.

If you have a history of myocardial infarction and stroke, you should refrain from taking the pills for 6 months after the disease. Never combine the pills with other drugs that affect nitric oxide. Also, you should not use this drug if sexual activity is contraindicated to you.

Side effects

Viagra can cause the following side effects:

• headaches;
• sleep disturbance;
• blurred vision;
• noises in the ears;
• increased muscle tone;
• conjunctivitis;
• pharyngitis;
• sinusitis;
• skin rash;
• gastrointestinal disorder;
• nausea;
• vomiting;
• dry mouth.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

The drug is not intended for use in women. According to research and experiments on animals, the drug has no teratogenic effects on the fetus.

Interactions

Some drugs can change the effect of Viagra. Tell your doctor about any medications you are taking. Do not start or stop taking the medication without consulting your doctor or pharmacist:

• Remember that these pills should never be co-administered with medicines containing nitrates;
• If you are taking an alpha-blocker medication to treat hypertension (high blood pressure) or problems with the prostate gland, your blood pressure may drop dramatically. You may feel weak or dizzy;
• If you are taking protease inhibitors, you may need to adjust the dose;
• Sildenafil should not be used together with any other drugs that cause an erection: pills, injections, implants or vacuum pumps.

Precautions

Before using ED medication, you should undergo a thorough physical examination.

If an erection persists for more than 4 hours (priapism), the patient should immediately seek medical attention. If priapism therapy is not carried out immediately, it can cause damage to the tissues of the penis and irreversible loss of potency.

An overdose of sildenafil can intensify certain side effects. The treatment is symptomatic. Dialysis is not recommended, as it will be ineffective due to the fact that the agent is quickly bound to the plasma.

The safety and efficacy of Viagra together with other PDE5 inhibitors or other drugs for the treatment of pulmonary hypertension containing sildenafil or other means of treating erectile dysfunction have not been studied, so the use of such combinations is not recommended.

Since this drug may cause dizziness, lower blood pressure, chromatopsia, blurred vision and other side effects, caution should be exercised when driving vehicles and doing other potentially hazardous activities that require increased concentration and psychomotor speed. You should also be attentive to the individual action of the medication in these situations, especially at the beginning of treatment and when changing the dosage regimen.
